Why it isn't a good idea to hire a cheap freelancer on Fiverr for your book cover
Before you can argue with me that you're an independent author who doesn't have a big budget and that these people who charge low for their services on Fiverr live in developing countries so it's Ok, let me give you some reasons why choosing to take this route won't be beneficial to YOU.
The design 9 times out of 10 isn't good
There is a reason why people charge low for their services and most of the time, it is because it isn't a good quality job and they probably got it done in no time. The cover of your book is the first impression your reader will get of your story. It's better if you choose to save up your money and have a better cover than to spend money on a bad cover that you will have to redo later on and end up spending more money.
You won't build a relationship with your freelancers
Most cheap designers on Fiverr are looking for a quick job. They don't care about your book, and if you're an independent author it is crucial that you cultivate a relationship with your whole team. You need a strong team who care for you and your story to make your readers care as well. Also, on platforms like Fiverr, the freelancers get pushed back or deleted from the site altogether on a daily basis. It might happen that you would need to find a new designer every time you have a new book.
Fiverr doesn't help it's freelancers
I had an account on Fiverr for six months before they decided to push my account out of the front page of their site. I worked very hard to deliver the best covers I could and to get the best reviews from my clients and even after over 20+ 5-star reviews they decided that my account wasn't worth showing to potential clients anymore. I contacted them directly and they said that because they wanted to showcase other freelancers my account was pushed back. I thought fear enough, maybe in a couple of days it would go back to normal. Well, it didn't. In fact, I waited a whole month and nobody was seeing my ads. I even created new ones to see if they would go to the front page but all they got was 0 views. And just like that my business was lost, I had to start all over with zero clients. After a couple of months, Fiverr decided to terminate my account. Just like that. No questions asked.
Also, if you don't already know. They collect 20% of the TIPS you leave for your freelancers. Even the TIPS!
Freelancers won't read your books
If you're one of those types of authors who like it when their artist reads the book before creating the cover, you won't have the option here. As I said, the designers who charge cheap are usually looking for a quick job, they don't want to know much about you or your book, they just want to finish the job and move on to the next client.
The cheap becomes expensive
Overall, I think it's best if you just wait and save up money for a good quality cover. No, you don't have to break the bank but trying to be cheap is gonna show, and your potential readers are not going to appreciate it. People don't know you, they have no idea what your intentions are so your cover is the first impression they will get from you. Make it count. Take your time when publishing don't rush and you will see that doing things with calm and precision will be a lot better in the long run.
